Company History

L.J. Smith Stair company was started by L.J. Smith in 1885 in Pittsburgh. In 1911 he moved his family to Ohio and renamed the company L.J. Smith and Son. The father and son team, along with seven other employees, began designing and building circular stairways in upscale homes all over the south. Smith died in 1942 but the company still thrived under the leadership of his son.

The balusters are also stronger and more secure than other stair types. L.J. Stairs uses a double end lag screw that results in the baluster being more secure to the treads. The innovative system makes the baluster very tight against the surface increasing the rail system strength.
