While it looks simple enough, installing trim can be a challenge for beginners. The following tips will help you install trim like a pro.

Trim Tip 1: An Assembly Table Can Save Time

It is easier to work with trim if you can do some preassembly for jambs and casings. This will require an assembly table. A broad, sturdy surface is best, so you can lay your work out flat. A table is especially important when installing trim around large windows.

Trim Tip 2: Strengthen Joints by Using a Jack Miter

A jack miter combines a miter joint with a butt joint. It will strengthen the finished structure and reduce wood movement. That means you are less likely to leave gaps during installation.

Trim Tip 3: Create a Pitch Block with Measurements

Create a pitch block and write your angles and measurements on each corresponding side. You can use it to adjust your miter saw. It also works as a handy template for handrails and skirts.

Trim Tip 4: Use Blocks to Apply Pressure to Miter

You need pressure to get a tight fit before the glue dries. An easy way to do this is to take two blocks and cut a 45 degree notch into each. Make sure the grooves are equal distances on each block then clamp or screw into place. Hook a clamp into the notches and tighten.

Types of Moulding

Baseboard mouding

Baseboard mouding – this is the most common moulding and is installed at the bottom of the wall at the floor to cover up the transition. The typically baseboard moulding is 2-6 inches tall.

Casing

Casing – casing is used to fill in the space between a door and a wall or a window and a wall. Casings are typically 1-4 inches.

Crown moulding

Crown moulding – crown moulding is used to fill the space between the wall and ceiling. Crown moulding was used in older homes and gives them a lot of character missing in newer homes. Most homes that use crown mouldings go with 4-5 inches in size.

Chair railing moulding

Chair railing moulding – this type of moulding is used to protect the walls from chairs bumping but is mainly used for décor. It typically runs at least 30 inches high from the base of the floor.

How to Choose the Right Moulding

Style – the style of your home plays the biggest factor into what type of moulding you are going to select. For example, some people really like crown moulding but it doesn’t go in a contemporary ranch style home.   • 25’ tape measure
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Miter box
  • Nail gun
  • Caulking gun
  • Spackle
  • Sandpaper

Measure two times cut once – measure the walls very carefully, mark the length of the board, and measure the wall again.

Start with an easier project – for your first time start with an easier room requiring simple baseboard moulding then move to more difficult mouldings.
